Filmmaker Alexandria Lane told Short of the Week: “Growing up as a closeted queer person in a deeply religious part of Texas, I used coded language and signals to express desire. Once I moved to a more progressive and liberal city, things became more direct, but I often think about the beauty and fluidity of that secret language. This film documents one of these kinds of encounters and the language queer people use to survive in conservative or religious spaces. Hot Sheet Motel is also an homage to older southern generations of the LGBTQ+ community who were forced to stay closeted for decades out of fear of persecution. The film begs the question, ‘Where is desire allowed?’ and ‘Where does desire live inside us?’.”
